"PHOTOS BY MONTH" PagePhotos are grouped by year and month. A separate column on the left lists the best photos (WOW, ART, GOOD, etc.) and the last 60 sets of photos taken, latest on top. Some of the better photos are also displayed. Each month's block lists the directories for that month. Each line in a column refers to a directory of photographs taken the same day. The actual link is restricted to the sequence number portion of the line to try to keep the line more readable. FORMAT: Directory#, Date, First photo#, #photos, FlagSample Entry: 002 13 V0001 17 W 002 -- Link to the directory for that date. The number is the sequence number portion of the directory created by the camera for all the photographs taken on that day. (The actual directory name includes the date.) 13 -- Day of the month. The day the photo-graphs were taken. V0001 -- Sequence number of the first photo in the directory as numbered by the camera. Since not all photos were taken with the Minolta, earlier sequence numbers use a V or a dash to indicate the lower VGA quality of the Pen Camera I had been using. 17 -- Number of photos in the directory. Not all photos are worth keeping, so the number of photos in any directory does not necessarily correspond to the increasing sequence number assigned to each image by the camera. W -- At least one "WOW" quality photo taken on this date. "G" would indicate at least one GOOD quality photo. Letter is a link to the first image so rated.
M -- At least one .mov (Quicktime movie) file in the directory.

DATED CONTACT SHEETThe contact sheet contains small versions of the pictures in that day's directory folder. If there are few pictures for that day, larger images may be shown. All pictures were taken on the date listed. Each picture links to a larger (640 x 480) version of the picture. The blue bar to the left of each row links to a page showing larger versions of that row. The colored area under each picture has either the title, or a series of check-boxes to rate the picture. Clicking on the title text or the "!" or "?" brings up a more detailed evaluation sheet for the picture. Similarly, clicking the number under the blue bar to the left of the row will bring up a detailed evaluation page for all the pictures in that row. The evaluation bar under untitled pictures has four, actually five options:
A "?" after the title or instead of the "!" indicates that the 640x480 version is the largest size available. This is usually because the picture was not important enough to retain the full sized original. Documentary photographs of advertisements, car odometers, pump displays, receipts, etc. generally don't require full sized orignials. The classification of each picture is shown as the color below the picture.
Please DO rate these photographs!Click on the SUBMIT or LOG button at the bottom of the set of pictures to submit your opinion. We do want your opinion! A calibration box shows red, green, blue, and yellow (red+green) color boxes plus white to dark gray set on a pure black background. The darkest square should be distinct from the black background of the box. A search box near the bottom provides a means of searching the photo archive. The two gray columns on the left and right of the date provide a means of quickly moving to adjacent dates. Some contact sheets, these with an "EVAL" link on the upper right, link a larger index files which contain multiple 640x480 pictures with detailed evaluation pages. Depending upon connection rates, this may or may not be advisable. |

PICTURE BLOCKThis is an unmarked box containing the picture and some camera generated technical data. The PictureThe picture is usually a highly compressed smaller version of the actual picture. (Except Folders below 80) If available, the picture links to a larger version of the original with additional evaluation forms. That picture in turn links to the full sized original. Click on the picture to see a 640 x 480 version. Folders below 80 contain a series of larger photos. The "V" series of photos, taken by the 007 Pen Camera are of such poor quality they are usually not further compressed, and may be shown at whatever size they were taken at.
File Availabilitypict5776 -- The file name of the actual picture, usually a sequence number assigned by the camera when the picture was taken.
MSF -- Sizes the picture is available in. M for margin sized, S = screen 640x480, and F for "full sized" raw image. Technical Data2004:07:09-18:28:32 -- Date and time code from the camera, if available. Year:Month:Date- Hour:minute:second. Not always accurate due to Daylight Savings time changes and camera drift. Usually correct to within and hour and some minutes. |
EVALUATION BLOCKThe marked and sectioned blue box is used as a preliminary means of screening, deleting, and categorizing photos. The input is stored in a data file and used to generate labels, purge photos, etc. when the directory is reprocessed. Other pages may contain more detailed evaluation blocks.Top Row -- What This Ispict5776.jpg -- The file name of the picture is sometimes repeated. Dog -- Categories and words to find this and similar photos, if assigned. May include a title, or may just be a few words to search for similar pictures with. The photo search engine, available from most photo pages, will evaluate these words. Second Row -- QualityDEL -- "Radio Button" to delete the photo. Deletions are processed whenever the index for that directory is reprocessed to reflect changes. GOOD -- "Radio Button" to flag photo as having high merit, worth listing under "good" in the main index page. WOW -- "Radio Button" to flag photo as having exceptional merit, worth listing under "WOW" in the main index page. "WOW" photos are often selected for the "Picture of the Day" at Mall-Net Third Row -- CategorizationThe rough categories Documentation, Art, and Background (BKG) serve to help sort the pictures. They are not always used...DOC -- "Radio Button" to flag a photo as documenting something. For example, photos of my odometer and gas pumps are used to document gasoline consumption. Photos of ads serve instead of taking notes of what is on a bulletin board. Some photos of my camp are used to document changes. DOC photos are restricted and will not show on the more public pages. Art -- "Radio Button" to flag photo as having some artistic merit as opposed to being retained (or tolerated) solely for documentary purposes. "Art" is a larger category including "Good" and "WoW". BKG -- "Radio Button" to flag photo being useful as a background for web use, such as in the left column of one of my camping pages. Backgrounds are usually textures used to set a space or hint at a mood. They often include such repetitive items as sand, gravel, bark, leaves, pine needles, etc. Fourth Row -- PhotographerJVV -- "Radio Button" to flag photo being mine. It's the default, so it isn't used. AB -- "Radio Button" to flag photo being taken by Audie Burrel. Audie has, on some rare occasions used my camera. Sometimes as I am driving him to school or shopping, when sees something particularly interesting he may pick up the camera and take a picture. BB -- "Radio Button" to flag photo being made by Barry Burrel. If I am busy driving, I may ask Barry to try to take a photo for me of something interesting. Fifth Row -- CategoriesWords which can be used as search categories to find this picture. Sometimes they may resemble a title; but that is not their primary intent. |
